LOUD AND PROUD CHOIR PERFORMANCE REVIEWS

Loud & Proud on the Fringe – Saturday 28th August 2010   4 Stars ****

On this, a busy Edinburgh Fringe Saturday, Scotland’s first LGBT choir Loud & Proud achieved the enviable feat of packing out a festival venue, and chose to fill it with their own brand of love, love, and more love. Set within the acoustically perfect Greyfriars Kirk, Loud & Proud’s acapella Fringe programme expertly exhibited the versatility, warmth, and knack for clean, swelling harmonies that has won the choir its wealth of enthusiastic supporters.
Entitled ‘Love is in the Air’; the concert drew its content from three main sources, dividing the programme into love according to contemporary pop & soul, African rhythms, and traditional Scottish melodies. Its premise to take in the ups and the downs of love in all its forms; the programme rose to heady, exuberant heights via Diana Ross, and rippled the Kirk walls with a poignant performance of Loch Lomond.
Testament to Loud & Proud’s confident, endearing stage presence (buoyed up in no small part by the enthusiasm of conductor and acting Artistic Director, Neil Squires) the choir divided and changed places as the harmonies shifted, all the while taking the audience with them on their voyage of love. A beautiful venue, an inspiring group of talented, united voices, and a selection of songs all serving as reminders of the reasons why people come together to sing in the first place. The two encores of the night were not nearly enough: bravo, Loud & Proud.
